Formic acid is used in beekeeping to help control Varroa mites. It is applied during spring and summer-autumn periods, following the recommended application conditions and safety precautions.
Directions for use
Before treatment, reduce the hive entrance to 15–20 mm. Use caution, as the smell of formic acid may attract robbing bees.
- Use formic acid at a concentration of 85%.
- The ambient temperature should be between +10°C and +25°C.
- Place a small container on top of the frames and add 30 ml of formic acid per bee colony.
- A small rubber bulb syringe can be used for measuring and dispensing the acid.
- Cover the frames with inner covers or plastic film, followed by burlap and the hive roof.
- In hives without inner covers, cover the container with cardboard, cloth or burlap, then close the hive with its lid.
- Approximately 10–15 ml evaporates per day.
- Treatment duration: no more than 2–3 days.
Application periods
- In spring, after the bees' spring cleansing flight.
- In summer and autumn, after honey extraction.
If the treatment is carried out in spring, the acid must be removed from the hive at least two weeks before the start of the main honey flow intended for harvesting.
First aid measures
In case of contact with formic acid:
- Remove contaminated clothing immediately.
- In case of inhalation: move the affected person to fresh air, keep them at rest and seek medical attention.
- In case of skin contact: immediately rinse thoroughly with plenty of water, apply sterile dressings and seek medical attention.
- In case of eye contact: rinse the eyes with running water for 15 minutes while holding the eyelids open, then consult an ophthalmologist.
- If swallowed: rinse the mouth, drink plenty of water and seek medical attention.
- In case of loss of consciousness: place the person in a horizontal position and check their pulse and breathing. Provide appropriate first aid if necessary.
⚠️ Important safety precautions: Formic acid is a corrosive substance. Wear acid-resistant gloves, protective goggles and suitable protective clothing when handling it. Avoid inhaling its vapours. Keep out of reach of children.
